The New “Up Close and Personal” General Admission Section

Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone developed a new view on the fan experience with their new "up close and personal" general admission section. Eighteen rows of the previous seating area has been removed to allow for fans to receive a festival atmosphere experience. The fan that would typically purchase a lawn ticket will now have a chance to enjoy the show from the once precious front row seats. Ten rows of seats remain in the lower GA section. These are on a first come, first serve basis.

On some shows the lower GA section will be regulated by wristbands for the first 5,000 patrons to arrive at the lower section, but this is on a show by show basis. We do not encourage nor allow camping at the venue gates or surrounding streets. For those interested in the blanket on the lawn atmosphere, this is still available and is purchased as a general admission ticket as well.

We believe that this change is a positive one. It opens the flow of the park and allows for the laid back atmosphere we hope to achieve.

I think this is such a great idea!  It will really bring the true fans up close.

I am quite upset about the new changes to the layout of the new “Sandstone”…to be expected to pay $60 for a seat that is in the middle of the entire layout is prepostrous.  I have been going to shows there for the last 8 years, buying lower reserved seating for all shows. I know I will never be a customer there again, as I refuse to pay that amount of money to be so far from the stage. It’s really a shame as I’m sure I won’t be the only person to feel like this.

I think this is WONDERFUL!!!!!! I love being up close but couldn’t always afford it. I loved the atmosphere of concerts at Sandstone before but this is even better.

Most of the shows that are at this venue are loud and people wanted to be up close. There will still be seats for the old, lazy and tried peolpe and the grass will open up more.It is a great idea.

I am really not a big fan of this!!  We have been going to Sandstone for years also to almost every country concert and always bought seats.  Usually in upper reserved, but would go lower if the price was reasonable.  I can only imagine the price tag for the few seats left will be going up.
And what is the point of the few rows left in the lower section?  Those poor people wont be able to see a thing with every standing in front of them.
Glad you’re back open, think this was a horrible idea though!

I am so glad that Sandstone is open, however the seating is ridiculous. I have tickets that I paid more money for so that I could have a seat if I wanted it. The only issue is that I will be behind the mixing booth & the entire lower level. The odds of getting a decent view are slim to none. Good luck trying to control the front GA area during certain concerts…sounds like a security nightmare.

Glad to see Sandstone staying open, but I’ll echo the previous comments.. I absolutely hate what has been done with the seating.  I was dissapointed about this when I first heard about it, and am even more so now after seeing this picture.  This change has already been the deciding factor in not attending 2 shows I otherwise would plan to be at this summer.

I think the genl admission section up front is an awsome idea. It will allow those of us like me who have a family t oprovide for to get out and enjoy a show up close with out making us spend a bunch of money to do so. And to Reba who said she wouldnt pay $60 for a seat like that, Did you check out the schedule section on this web site? The only way you’ll be paying $60 is if you buy your tickets from a scalper and I hope you get a lousy seat if you use a scalper for your tickets. SCALPERS SUCK

Yeth! Go the Concrete Street way! http://sandstoneamp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

This way is ALMOST perfect. I don’t care what the hell ju people who disagree say. It’s almost like Concrete Street which is AMAZING. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE. And I almost got to touch Jason Wade’s hand, I have Jason’s pick, my bestest friend has Bryce’s pick… and BEST OF ALL… we mentally communicated with Bryce Soderberg. http://sandstoneamp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

it sounds crazy but it’s true. we were RIGHT in front of him the whole time and he kept making eye contact. He threw TWO picks at me and my friend.

Don’t tell me that this is a ridiculous idea. Sure. The moshing at SOME concerts will be absurd but it’s a beautiful thing. Sometimes, the mosh pits will be the band’s fault SUKAS. http://sandstoneamp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

I was so dissapointed when I heard about the new GA section at Sandstone.  I thought GA admission was outlawed years ago it is so dangerous. We look forward all summer to going to Sandstone but I have already told my girls they wont be going to Red,White and Boom and I dont think they we will be attending any more concerts at Sandstone this summer either it is such a shame we really look forward to it. But with the seats we usually get now non-existent I dont want to be in General Admission and I wont pay to sit in the back where you need binoculars. I am glad your back but I wish you were back like you have always been. http://sandstoneamp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif

In my opinion, this is an excellent decision for Sandstone. Full competition with Starlight is now impossible (take a look at the huge Starlight schedule this year), so removing the GA section will provide an entirely different concert experience. If you want reserved seats to a show, you’re probably better off at Starlight or the Sprint Center anyway. Me, I’ll be at both this summer- both Starlight and Sandstone are great venues.

Hey dis Lindsay I was written bout da new seatin agreement. I think that it is wonderful dat you guys put da grass in front of da seats. why i think that is because when the gernal addimission is behind the seats those ppl can’t see anything they can just hear

I think the GA area up front is a great idea! I’ve been to tons of concerts and can say without hesitation that I would rather stand and dance than be planted in my seat.  I have no doubt that the performers would rather play to an energetic crowd that is standing up and showing a little enthusiasm than a bunch of lame ducks sitting in their seats.  I’m not sure if you complainers noticed, but Sandstone is trying to make a comeback.  This will be a great way to get people that were priced out of the close seats back to the venue.  I say if you are too lazy to stand up, then you deserve to sit farther back (unless you have a disability).

From the rain at the Eagles show to the sweltering heat at Sammy Haggar we had considered Sandstone our “concert home” and had made memories and friends there that will last a lifetime.

We were upset over the intial name change and never refered to our favorite venue using the V word (Verizon) and people who knew concerts always referred to her as Sandstone.

Had heard rumors of its closing last year and chalked it up to urban sprawl in that area.

And then a glimmer of hope was seen with the announcement that Capitol Fedral had decided not only to sponsor the venue but to also bring back the rightful name SANDSTONE!!

Its just too bad they defiled the hallowed ground by removing the lower reserved seating and by doing so in my opinion do not deserve the right to use the word SANDSTONE.

Shame on you Capitol Federal.

Talk about an accident waiting to happen.  I am a Sandstone concert-goer from way back.  This new seating arrangement is HORRIBLE.  You’re going to have a mob of people trying to get “the front row experience” without the “front row price”.  There are reasons for venues charging more for closer seating.  I take my daughter to Red White & Boom every year, I purchased our VIP tickets the minute tickets went on sale, not knowing of the change in seating arrangements.  Had I known of this I would have NEVER bought them, and I’m sure I will have a hard time selling them because of it.  Why would anyone want to pay extra to sit BEHIND GA???  You really need to re-think this, maybe after all the incidents that are bound to happen actually DO HAPPEN, you will come to your senses.

On June 25 2008 Christina said:

You people are crazy! I think this is great and I too have been a faithful SANDSTONE concert goer since I could walk, never ever using the “V” word. I do agree that they will have people rushing to the pit tearing over each other and that the wristbands should be given out at the door. They are asking for a lawsuit by the handicapped on that one. But I enjoy the idea of having a great place to dance at Jack Johnson this year, something that Starlight does not offer. And frankly, when ever I bought seats in the lower level, everyone was seat skipping anyway, now they don’t have to. Why would you complain about paying more for reserved seats, you get a seat! The front row should be about die hard fans that want to taste the sweat of the artist they love so much, and for years rich people who could afford those seats are SITTING while we are stuck in the green. Who do you think the artist themselves would rather see, people sitting, or people going crazy dancing and having a great concert experience. If you don’t like it, don’t go, then I won’t have to worry about you taking my wristband!

On June 26 2008 Jeff said:

I like to see Sandstone open but I absolutely HATE this idea.  I always paid more for the tickets up front.  This gave me a seat to sit in if and when I got tired not to mention guaranteed my spot for the show.  Now if you are up front and have to go to the bathrooms, your spot is now gone.  Also, I see some people saying that they love the idea because they couldn’t afford the seats up front and now they can be up front.  HELLO!!!!!!! From what I have found everywhere it doesn’t matter if you get seats or get lawn, its the same freaking price.  So if I am paying $60 for my seat guess what? SO ARE YOU FOR LAWN!!!!  So to the people saying they loved it, what do you think now????

On June 26 2008 Jeff said:

Also to comment on Christina and a few others, you are making a lot of assumptions about people that bought seats.  I am by no means rich nor even well off for that matter.  If you think buying a $60 ticket means you are rich than maybe you should learn what REAL rich people have in thier wallets.  I have sat in the lawn and in the seats but for the past few years I have always bought seats.  I stand up while the bands play just as everyone else in the seats.  We use the seats in between bands to rest our feet.  Then you have people like Christina who try to say this is a good idea because now the die hard fans can get up front.  Just because I save money between summers to have enough to buy seats makes you a bigger fan than me?  Wouldn’t the person that takes the time to make sure they can afford to be as close as possible be the true fans if you are going to measure it like that?  We are all hardcore fans regardless of whether we bought seats or lawn tickets.

On June 27 2008 Tim said:

Like you guys, I have loved Sandstone for years.  For the last several summers I made no less than 4 trips to Bonner Springs and when I decided to search out this website and find out what the new management had coming I literally had one of those “wtf” looks on my face for about 5 minutes after seeing the pic above.
I wish they would have fixed the place up instead of removing the best seats in the house.  This was a horrible idea.  And I’m sad to see basically no big name country acts coming.  Yallapalooza is a big let down this year also.
Best of luck to the new management, I think you have some re-thinking to do!

On June 29 2008 Vinnie said:

This seating change was obviously not very well thoughout.  Safety will certainly prove to be an issue.  I sure hope you also increased your number of security personnel.  Security personnel will have their hands full now for sure.  Now the crap that took place on the lawn, will take place right in front of all the fans that purchase reserved seating and in front of the stage and performers.  What a slap in the face to all the dedicated diehard fans who have spent the extra money over the years for the lower level seats.  Looks like business at Starlight has already picked up.  Once the word gets out to all the big name entertainers, they will surely perform elsewhere.  I sure hope you kept those old seats!  Your gonna need em!  I’m not likely to be back until the seats are back.

I WILL NOT BE BACK UNTIL THE LOWER RESERVED ARE BACK!!!  Thanks for thinking about the people who want to hear music not mosh!!

Horrible idea.  I pay more to sit in the back? I want a seat, I don’t want to fight for a ‘place’ in the front.  What if I want a beer or to go to the bathroom?  Then I have to make my out and back again.
Stupid idea.

On June 30 2008 jen said:

What might be helpful for people like some of the previous posters, is for Sandstone to explain how the new seating was determined. For instance, it could be very successful in other establishments like this in other areas of the country. People tend to get irritable when they don’t understand why something was done.
I think that it is clear that profitability is an issue for this venue. Maybe they needed to do this to keep Sandstone open?
Also, I think the 10 rows of seats in the stage area GA would not turn into a mosh pit, so consider going early and getting one of those seats.

I agree security will be a concern, but I’m quite sure they are covering their bases. After all, they have a lot at stake financially, don’t you think?
So, disgruntled posters, keep an open mind and stop assuming the worst.
And Sandstone, you might give us some more information so that others who immediately assume this will ruin their concert experience will have some words of comfort.

On July 01 2008 Rochelle said:

I think this looks like a great idea because at most concerts I don’t sit down and like to be close. For you people that like to sit down and be lazy, then that’s fine and buy the seats. For those that say GA is too dangerous, the only concerts that are crazy in front of the stage are probably concerts that you aren’t going to. Front row seats should be for the biggest fans and if you just want to sit and chill, I’m sure there are bigger fans that will stand up and dance and enjoy themselves. Is dancing dangerous?!!! The concerts you probably go to are ones I wouldn’t be caught dead at. I’ve seen bands at Cains Ballroom in Tulsa where it is al open seating and no seats and it’s been the best concert experience for me.

I wouldn’t want to be in that mess, so now I have to pay more for a seat and not be as close as I should be. Its stupid, whoever thought of this is stupid!!!!!!

Sandstone is the only venue besides Kemper that even has seats, and some of the best concerts are at places like the beaumont where the only place to sit is at the bar, IN THE BACK
concerts aren’t about just sitting and listening to music, you can listen to the radio at home if thats what you wanna do. concerts are about showing your love and appreciation for the band. Mosh pits may happen, but thats what the bands want, they want people to get sweaty and have a good time, if it were me up on stage and i looked into the front of the stage and saw a bunch of people just siting or standing there i would be so disappointed,
this is going to bring around a lot more rock concerts and is going to allow people who can hardly afford to go to concerts a much better chance to be able to enjoy their favorite bands up close, and i definitely think it will bring in more money, i will be much more likely to go to more concerts now that i know i can enjoy front row for a dam good price.

PLUS: with all the moshing thats going to be done at the “new and improved” sandstone, and being a nurse myself, i know first hand how rough moshing and crowd surfing can be… now realize how much worse its gonna be when some kid lands face first on that concrete… it happens all the time at places like these, but usually its grass… not 5 inch thick concrete. what was cap. fed. thinking?!?! this will be the last concert at the beloved sandstone i attend. </3

I think this is a great idea. I have attended many 311 concerts at Sandstone over the years and have never been too close to the stage. I was at 311 Day 2008 and it was awesome. I saw 311 in DesMoines last summer, all open standing GA, I was centerstage, frontrow for the whole thing. It was an incredible experience, though I said I would probably not fight the crowd to do it again. Just saw 311 in Omaha last wednesday at Westfair and it is like sandstone but with no seats at all. all GA. I got to within 10-12 rows of the front for a while and then dropped back to sit on the grass on the hill to watch the rest. Loved the setting. I for one am getting to sandstone early on thursday for 311 and getting a spot up close. I love it. Give it a try before you bad mouth it so much.    311!!!!!!!!!!

I think the seating change is something that had to happen. Posters have complained that because of the seat change big name acts aren’t coming. But I think its the other way around, big name acts weren’t coming to Sandstone (mostly because there are many nicer venues) so they changed the seats to attract other artist. I think if this change hadn’t happened then our beloved Sandstone would not have lasted very long. Concerts have been held at the Beaumont Club and other venues for years where there is GA seating, I’ve attended many of these and have never had any problems. It makes me   so unhappy to look down and just see people sitting while an artist sacrifices time with their families to be out on the road. I’m happy I won’t have to see that anymore!

I think I am agreeing with most people here that the seats should come back.  It doesn’t make much sense at all that people who pay more for a ticket should be sitting behind the people who paid for the cheapest tickets.  if anything you should have taken out the second row of seats and extended the lawn.  Leave the up close seats for the people who wanna enjoy the concert itself, leave GA for the people who are just there for the party.

I understand the hesitency when a venue changes after being known as it was for many years.
I will be there at the Jack Johnson show. I just saw him at Alpine Valley in WI, which is a landmark. It is and always has been set up much the same way as Sandstone is now. I was in the general admission 5 to 10 rows of people back from the stage and it was perfectly fine. All age groups where there, and not once was there an issue of people being rude, etc.
Alpine Valley seats closer to 35,000 people between the “Pit”, up front general admission, reserved seats and the lawn seats behind. That is nearly twice the size of Sandstone. I think the experience will remain good for all.
However, I have not attended Sandstone prior to the upcoming show, so I can not speak from experience. I am only try to relay that other venues are set up similar and I have had good experiences, with general admission up front, seated and lawn seats in previous years.
I think the up front “mosh” problem comes into play with certain types of groups. I don’t see that happening with Jack, DMB and the like.

By the time Gary Allan comes on at Yallaplooza, the crowd will be drunk and there will be security nightmares in the front GA area with everyone wanting to get up close.  Only the first 5000 will get wristbands to go to the lower GA?  Maybe they should issue those when people buy their ticket so you know in advance what you are getting.  I have tickets for Yallaplooza but have no desire to go and fight with the crowd for a place to stand for 9 hours.

First, so happy that sandstone is back. Second I have been to concerts where u are back in the lawn and up close to the stage, I would not want to pay extra just to sit in the front. Before when the lawn was in the back so many people were crammed in the back, now you can pick and choose where u want to sit. The GA section is great u can pay a cheaper price for tickets and be close to the stage, when u get tired of standing just walk back to the many rows of Ga seats. Third to all the people saying that they hate and will never return back to sandstone, you people don’t know what you are missing. I’ll let u in on a little secret, you may like it and because of your attitude u will never know. Until u come and see the new seating for your self, just please shut up about not liking it.

Worst experience I have ever had at a Gary Allan concert or any concert. Drunk people falling all over you and not only spilling their beer but throwing it at people. I was General admission got 2 rows from the stage for $25- my luck - then people just kept sliding in front of us even after we had parked ourselves from 3 pm on. We held our spots for 7 hours roasting on the uncomfortable concrete. Some people were alowed to bring blankets in while others weren’t.Rude drunk and not drunk people. The security wouldn’t do a thing to any drunk girls - just yelled at the drunk guys to cool it. At least if you have seats they don’t allow the crowd to get in front of you. Had rude drunk women say “I payed 70 bucks for my ticket I should be able to walk in front of you no matter what”. Then they pulled their old mothers who also were drunk in front of us. Not my problem they paid that much. I could have easily gotten into a fight when people kept doing all of the above I mentioned. Ridiculous.

I have to admit I was skeptical about the new seating but I have been to the venue twice this year and I think it is good. Part of going to a concert is the crowd experience and standing and cheering for your favorite band. I understand what the occasional concert goer is saying about wanting a assigned seat but for someone who is there several times a year, it’s pretty cool. I have been there twice so far and another two to go this season. Besides its about supporting you favorite bands so to me it really doesn’t matter where they play. they made it just like a lot of the other venues like Memorial Hall and the Uptown where GA is up front.

WOW…have you been to the Sprint center???

talk about horrible. If you want to sit… go there and pay your extra for a “good seat”.

Can anybody relate to how annoying the old Sandstone was when you would sneak into the seat area under or over the gates and start dancing just to be told to go sit down??? How increadably LAME is that? I can’t wait to go see J.J. and let him see how much KC supports him by showing him a GOOD TIME. If I was an Artist preforming at sandstone I would certanly appreciate the changes…who wants to look at a bunch of fuddy-duddys not enjoying themselves just so they can be segragated from the FUN crowd?? I’m sure it was the artist decision to come to sandstone…guess the new GA doesn’t bother them!

I just got online to buy my tickets to Linkin Park … What did they do to the seating chart? It’s appalling!?!? I can’t believe they want me to pay $56/ticket to sit BEHIND general admission folks that only paid $25. That is ASININE!
And, why don’t I just buy GA, you ask? Because I’m 5 foot tall and tiny. It’s a hazard and risk. And, at this point, I’m also five months pregnant. My OB said it’d be a-okay to go to LP preggers as long as I was safe and sound in a seat. Does that mean I should be in the back?!?
And, frankly, I work hard and earn good money and budget it so that I can afford the privileges associated with reserve seating - which traditionally means good seats with a better view than the people who paid less.
I “did my time in the lawn,” back in high school and college and when I was first out. Now that I am an adult, I still love to rock and get up and dance when the band is on-stage, but I like the safety of knowing that some drunk college kid isn’t going to be falling all over me, as happens in GA.
I think the new management at Sandstone really has things backwards - literally and figuratively!!

i WILL be going to the Strange Noize tour this year and i WILL buy general admission tickets.  they’re way better then reserved seating anyways.  i have NEVER sat at a concert, except at red white and boom in iowa when we would sit on the lawn for a couple of minutes between sets.
grow up and be grateful that there’s even a venue for you to go to a concert.  no concerts ever come to where i live, and i will travel three hours to see Tech n9ne and kmk live because the concert is about having fun, not how great of a seat you get.
you people are ridiculous.

be grateful for what you have, or DON’T GO.

its that simple.

I definetely see a bright future ahead for the new seating arrangement for Sandstone.  This will be my first visit to the park and I can already say this is going to be a blast. I’ve only had one experience of being up close to my favorite band, and it was because I was given them; the tickets were origally $65. I agree, if you’re a die hard fan you’ll pay more for the up-close seats, but understand complainers, that some people in this world just can’t afford that luxury. I personally feel that a concert is totally based off of experience - I think this is a great way for the fans to interact with their fav. bands. All the complainers really need to stop because by Sandstone doing this, it gives everyone the chance to get a taste of what being up close without having to spend a fortune is all about.  If the park would lower all the ticket prices the same would all u moaners be happy - hell no! Would u complainers be happy if the seats behind the new GA were the all the same price - hell no! Because u bitchers think that the only solution is to keep it the way it was before - pay more for the up close seats near the stage. Oh, and by the we wouldn’t be able to see a damn thing either if the seating arrangement went back to the way it was. Just because u people who are able to sit aside that kind of money to have that comfort - doesn’t mean everyone does.  You moaners aren’t the only ones living on this selfish planet.

I think this is absolutely, postively an amazing change!!  My friend and i are going to the Linkin Park concert today and i’m not sure anyone there except my mom wants to be sitting down during it!  This way my friend and i will be able to get up close to the stage and have a rocking good time!

On August 14 2008 Keri said:

Ya know it’s sad. i LOVE the new seating arrangment. i’m sorry that all you rick jerks think you’re too good to sit behind GA. Shut the hell up or don’t go. Personally, I hated going to Sandstone cause you had all the stupid seats in your way and couldn’t mingle as well. That’s one reason Rockfest was always better than any other concerts. Just like Warped tour. Did they actually every have it at the stage? Most of it was in the parking lot. But for you older people who just wanna sit around go to Starlight or the Sprint Center and get your VIP seats there. Thanks for coming back Sandstone and awesome way to make a comeback with the new seating!

On August 15 2008 Sara said:

I think the new arrangment is AMAZING..The people who go to GOOD concerts dont want to sit the whole time they want to get up and jump around and have a good time…and you cant have a good time when your just sitting in those horrible seats…Thats what they made Starlight and the Sprint Center for is to go and not have fun BECAUSE YOUR SITTING DOWN!!!..have you ever seen people at a Slipknot concert sitting down in seats just listening..I DONT THINK SO!!!! And if you dont like the puhing and shoving and the crowd then I have a simple solution for you…DONT GO IN THE CROWD SIT YOU PANSY BEHIND IN THE SEATS AND SHUT UP OR DONT GO AT ALL WE DONT WANT PEOPLE LIKE YOU COMPLAINING THE WHOLE TIME ABOUT PEOPLE AROUND YOU!!!

On August 18 2008 somebody said:

The new seating arrangement is not good at all. Hate it. If you can’t get there when the doors open you don’t get seats up close. All this does is add to congestion around the GA area, and if I were someone paying for a reserved seat, I’d be pissed that they let GA down in front for a less expensive ticket. It makes no sense. Sandstone is too big for GA, go back to reserved seating and lawn or make the whole place GA and get rid of the stupid wrist band thing.
Also, could you please add more bathrooms. There was a 30 minute wait for the bathrooms at Jack Johnson. Insane.
I’ll stick to shows at the Uptown, VooDoo, etc. Places that are much better as GA.

On August 28 2008 hannah said:

honestly, quit complaining. everyone on here is complaining about nothing. have you been to rockfest? its crazy, yes it does get crazy, but its never out of hand. grow up

On January 16 2009 Kramer said:

They didn’t do it for fans, they didn’t do it because it’s a whole new way to experience music. They did it to go after the City Market type shows. They can’t compete on the level of Starlight or Sprint Center, so they are switching from watered down country acts or adult Contemporary shows to more physical GA type shows, say the Killers. Younger crowds and heavier bands prefer this kind of set up, and thus the change. Personally, for their biz I think this is a good move, but with P&L Live, City Market, etc. it’s going to be tough to find artists big enough to justify this kind of venue over the other options.

There sure are alot of cry baby winers on here.  This is the best idea yet.  Letting the hard working class people be able to get up front, without breaking the bank. It’s sheer genuis.  And for all of you saying that you and all of your friends won’t be attending anymore concerts at Sandstone, there’s plenty of people who will now start attending concerts at Sandstone because of this.  I back the up front GA section 100%.  Way to go Sandstone, way to get with the times.  ROCK ON!!!

Sandstone always sucked. No we get to fight for up close views in person rather than in line online to get tix. Parking sucks w all the dust n getting out with zero assistance is worse. I stopped going here years ago. Thank goodness kc has other options today. No wonder sandstone is so desprately trying to keep things new n fresh. Too bad n within 5 years goodbye forevere
