Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone hosted the annual DARE Festival on May 14, 2009. Celebrating the accomplishments of 3000 students, the house was rocking with enthusiasm. Students from two states, 50 plus schools and 10 counties filled the amphitheater to enjoy music, bands and entertaining speakers.
Starting the festival with the Pledge of Allegiance, students stood proud as they placed their hand across their heart. Visiting speakers included several local police officials and state officials congratulating the students on their success in completing the DARE program. Retro Bill however was the star of the show. With his wacky looks and entertaining style, Retro Bill kept the kids attention throughout the day, introducing other performers and reminding the kids how important it is to say no to drugs and alcohol.
Supporting local talent, several police officials formed a cover band and had the kids off their feet rushing to the stage. The young band Clever by Accident also performed and became local celebrities in 15 minutes, signing autographs for a long time after their set. Also joining the list was country performer Christy Crook, dancing group Power and Life, Disney's Jordan Pruitt and rapper Alan Bradley. Every artist brought something to the days success; words of wisdom, talented lyrics and energy.
All students were very helpful in placing trash in its respective places and also helped the staff of Cap Fed Park continue our green initiatives and chose to place their plastic bottles and soda cans in the recycle bin instead of the trash can. When I asked one Bonner Springs student if he was having fun, he told me this was the best day ever. We hope the students will join us again next year for another successful DARE Festival.
